Mercedes-AMG moving assembly of 12-cylinder engine to mannheim

By ,

In response to continuing strong demand for its high-performance cars, Mercedes-AMG has announced it will transfer the assembly of its 12-cylinder engines from Affalterbach to its Daimler facility at Mannheim. The engines are used in the Mercedes-AMG S 65, S 65 Coupé, G 65 and SL 65 models.

The current assembly plant is operating at full capacity, according to Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, and the move will allow the company to ramp up production to meet increased demand. Assembly of the V12 biturbo engines will start at Mannheim in February 2016. The Affalterbach facility will take over production of V8 engines.

One thing that will not change is the traditional Mercedes-AMG practice of having each AMG engine built fully by hand by one individual engine fitter. The Affalterbach personnel currently building the 12-cylinder engines will be transferred over to the V8-engine assembly line.
