With new models on the way in the next few months, Mercedes-Benz has a revised nomenclature in store, as well.
The system will centre around the five core model series -- A, B, C, E and S -- which will continue to be used to provide orientation for our customers. Meanwhile, all SUV models will in the future have the first two letters "GL" in their name, except the legendary G-Class.
Furthermore, the system for 4-door coupes will use the first two letters "CL," while roadsters will all include "SL" in their names.
In a development paralleling that of the model series designations, the different types of engines will also be given new designations. Here are some examples:
- E 350 BlueTEC becomes E 350 d;
- B 250 Electric Drive becomes B 250 e;
- B 200 Fuel Cell becomes B 200 f;
- S 400 Hybrid becomes S 400 h.
The defining and established designation 4MATIC for all-wheel-drive vehicles will remain unchanged (and will be celebrating its 30th anniversary next year).
Let's not forget the launch of the new Mercedes-Maybach ultra-high-end division.
