Mercedes-Benz G500: Dare to be original.

By ,

The trend right now is for big huge and powerful sport utility vehicles. At first, we were astonished by the huge Lincoln Navigator, then came the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade EXT . Japanese automakers have the Toyota Sequoia and Europeans have the Range Rover and now the Mercedes-Benz G500!

Have you seen this truck? Actually, it is brand new to the North American market but the G500 is based on a sport utility that has been marketed in Europe for many years, the Geleandenwagen. But seeing that huge trucks like the Hummer H1 and H2 were about to make it on the market, Mercedes-Benz thought it might succeed with only a few added luxury items and, why not, a powerful V8 to replace the traditional diesel engine.

I got a brand new G500 for a week here around Montreal and I first asked myself who would spend more than $106,000 for such a truck ? Well, if you want to be original and you have the means, why not? This MB is powered by a 5.0-liter gasoline V8 that pumps out 292 horsepower which generates 344 lbs-ft of torque! Performance wise, the truck is quick. It will accelerate to 100 kmh (62 mph) in less than 8 seconds and passing power is incredible. The car has a five-speed automatic transmission that can be operated manually. Naturally, it's an all-wheel drive sport-ute with differentials that can be locked in the front, in the rear or in the middle.
