Mercedes rebels in Beijing with Concept Style Coupé

By ,

Billed as “non-conformist, provocative and masculine,” the Concept Style Coupé is making a statement at the Mercedes stand at Auto China 2012.

Featuring “innovative” indicators, a new 4-cylinder turbocharged, 211-hp engine and 4Matic AWD, the four-door coupé (wait. what?) is near production standard and, according to the legendary Dieter Zetsche, “the model against which sporty vehicles in the executive segment will have to measure themselves in future.”

Or, as Gorden Wagener, head of design for M-B, hyperbolically put it, “It’s breathtaking proportions, sinewy fluid surfaces and sculptural lines are the physical expression of our dynamic design idiom.” Uh huh.

Its predatory headlamps shine red in standby mode, while individual lights on the indicators come on in succession. A lack of B-pillar and frameless side windows help the fluid look.

A panoramic sunroof brightens the interior, which features a carbon fibre trim panel spanning the width of the instrument panel. A light grey and anthracite colour palette is spruced up with neon green trim.
