Metal-air batteries that provide 1,600 km of range

By ,

An Israeli startup by the name of Phinergy claims it could launch by 2017 a metal-air battery technology that would provide a range of 1,600 kilometres. The struggling electric car market sure could use such a boost to win over potential customers.

However, since these new batteries are less convenient to charge/replace, they must be combined with traditional lithium-ion batteries. Still, some automakers have already shown interest. Tesla Motors, for one, has filed eight patent applications that reference "metal-air" batteries.

Whereas Phinergy talks about consumable batteries, Tesla is apparently looking to develop a specific charging system for metal-air batteries. The latter could use metals such as aluminum, iron, lithium, magnesium, vanadium, and zinc.
