EVs are still in their infancy, but the technological advances will never cease to amaze us. Students of the famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) proved that it’s possible to recharge EVs with liquid fuel.
Dubbed “Cambridge Crude”, the liquid can be used to recharge a Nissan LEAF or Mitsubishi i-MiEV a bit like a conventional car.
What’s more, the battery they recharged wasn’t a lithium-ion model, which could mean that a whole new type of system could eventually appear on the market.
It’s still too early to determine charging times, production and distribution costs and whether the system truly meets the needs of modern drivers, but it’s certainly an interesting development.
Yet-Ming Chiang, the professor who oversaw the project to “reinvent the rechargeable battery,” said he hoped to build a fully functional prototype within a year and a half.
