Mitsubishi president resigns in wake of cheating scandal

Mitsubishi today announced that president Tetsuro Aikawa and executive vice president Ryugo Nakao will both resign on June 24th in the wake of the company’s recent admission that it cheated in fuel economy tests as far back as 1991.

Last week, Nissan bought a 34% stake in Mitsubishi and became the latter’s majority shareholder after previously revealing its competitor’s fraudulent practices. Some of the affected vehicles were built for Nissan by Mitsubishi.

According to Bloomberg, Mitsubishi used “desktop calculations” to determine the fuel economy of models including the Outlander PHEV and didn’t conduct any tests on the RVR. The company chose to continue using illegal methods because they led to results that deviated by about 2.3% or less.
