Mitsubishi to kill EVO

By ,

Oh boy! Mitsubishi sure is serious about streamlining its product lineup. After announcing that the Galant, Eclipse and Endeavor will be phased out, the company now plans to kill the EVO.

The news that shocked the auto industry was announced by Gayu Eusegi, Mitsubishi’s global product director. ''There is still a demand [for the car],'' he said. ''But we must stop. Our influence now is EV technology''.

That means the Lancer Evolution X will be the last EVO ever produced.

''Maybe the world can change, and maybe someday we can do a motor race by electric vehicles,'' the director added. ''Maybe then we can enter the market again.''

The shift towards greener vehicles and technologies undertaken by Mitsubishi and most other automakers is slowly but surely annihilating fun though inefficient performance cars such as the EVO. Will this bold move encourage others to follow suit? It might not be a matter of ''if'' but ''when''.
