The Rallye international vert de Montréal 2011 , organized in collaboration with Hydro-Québec and the City of Montréal, will be held from September 30 to October 2. Sanctioned by the Fédération internationale de l’automobile (FIA) and ASN Canada FIA, this unique North American event is part of the Alternative Energies Cup, an FIA world championship that has been held in over 10 countries on more than four continents for five years. The Rallye international vert de Montréal , now in its fifth edition but for the first time, under this name, will enjoy the support of such car makers as Honda Canada, Toyota Canada and Mitsubishi Canada, and of such other partners as CAA-Québec and Budget Propane.
As was the case for the first four editions, this event will be governed by the International Sporting Code, the standard rules applicable to all FIA Time, Speed and Distance (TSD) rallies, and by rules specific to the event. Registered vehicles will be divided into such categories as hybrid, electric, biofuel, diesel, etc. and by weight (car, SUV, truck, prototype, etc.). This TSD event is reserved for vehicles using alternative energy or fuel sources. It is not a closed circuit speed event or a low speed event, but rather a challenge for green vehicles driven at normal speeds.
This three-day event will cover a distance of 600 km. Participants will start with a short event on the Gilles-Villeneuve Circuit on Friday evening. Then, on Saturday, they will drive through the magnificent fall landscapes of Lachute. Come Sunday, they will head to the South Shore, towards St-Hyacinthe, before heading back to Boucherville and then Downtown Montréal.
McGill College Avenue, in Downtown Montréal, will be the daily starting and arrival point of the rally. This beautiful Montréal street, open on Mount Royal, will also be the site of an exhibit on alternative technologies and energy sources presented by partners of the event, over the same three-day period.
This “eco-friendly” rally has attracted teams from Europe, Ontario and Québec, and represents an ideal opportunity to see different vehicles fuelled by alternative energy sources as part of a public event that tackles the challenge of making smarter consumption choices.
Accompanied by Roger Peart, President of ASN Canada FIA, the country’s sanctioning body representing the FIA, and Claude Quenneville, an event spokesperson, Peter Duncan, the man behind the event, said today in Montréal, “We are very proud to offer Montrealers a green, noise-free, car event in the heart of Downtown. Along with our exhibit on new green technologies we hope that this rally will inspire people to consider alternative energy sources.”
In compliance with the rules of this event, each vehicle will be weighed with their crew, and each energy source (gas, electricity, propane, etc) will be carefully measured in order to obtain a consumer index for each vehicle. The circuit itself will be developed with TSD tests where cars are required to follow a predetermined route at specific speeds and where hidden time controls are used to record ahead/behind times in minutes and/or seconds at specific checkpoints in order to determine rankings. Both rankings (the consumer index and the TSD tests) will then be combined to determine winners in each category.

Thanks to an exchange program set up with the prestigious Automobile Club de Monaco, the winner of the Rallye international vert de Montréal will compete in the 6th Rallye Monte-Carlo des véhicules à énergie alternative in March 2012. Likewise, Montréal will welcome the Ville de Clermont-Ferrant team that won the 2011 edition of this rally at the wheel of a Citroën C3.
