Both practice sessions for this weekend's Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island were held under different conditions as Ducati's Casey Stoner lead the way in the morning on a dry track while Repsol Honda's Nicky Hayden did the best time in the afternoon in wet conditions. Stoner set a blistering pace in the morning and only newly crowned MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi could manage a time close to the one set by the Australian. In the afternoon, conditions turned for the worst as riders had to content with a wet track. Nicky Hayden posted the best time but he had to wait until the last minutes of the session to beat Andrea Davizioso (Honda) who had lead most of the time but had finally to settle to second.
