Pole sitter Brian Vickers (Camry No 83) took advantage of the fuel economy run by then leader Jimmie Johnson (Chevy No 48) and many other drivers to finally pass them all and grab the lead at lap 198 of the 200 lap Carfax 200 NASCAR Sprint Cup race held at the Michigan International Speedway to capture team Red Bull's first victory in the Sprint Cup.
Though he too was careful about his fuel consumption, Johnson’s teammate Jeff Gordon (Chevy No 24) held on to second place as yet another Hendrick driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr (Chevy No 88) also raced to the checkered at the end of the race to take third place.
Carl Edwards (Ford No 99) was able to stay in fourth followed by Sam Hornish Jr (Dodge No 77). Casey Mears (Chevy No 07), Joey Logano (Camry No 20), Clint Bowyer (Chevy No 33), David Reutimann (Camry No 00) and Denny Hamlin (Camry No 11) rounded up the ten first spots of a race that was slowed a few times by light rain showers or sprinkles.
As for Jimmie Johnson who seemed headed for a victory, he had to stop for fuel two laps from the end and ended up 33rd. Point leader Tony Stewart (Chevy No 14) finished 17th. Mark Martin (Chevy No 5) and Matt Kenseth (Ford No 17) also both ran out of fuel but as Martin finished 31st, Kenseth was able to drive back up to 14th place.
The next Sprint Cup race will be held Saturday evening at the exciting Bristol Motor Speedway.
