NASCAR: Four races at the Brickyard 400 weekend at IMS

By ,

It’s official now, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will host four races in one weekend in July 26-29 2012.

NASCAR president Mike Helton called being part of the 2012 Super Weekend at IMS "a great opportunity for racing fans, great cross-over appeal."

“For NASCAR to exhibit its racing both at Daytona and Indianapolis is terrific for our sport. Both tracks are recognized as international icons," Helton added.

The GRAND-AM series and NASCAR Nationwide Series will be making their debuts at the 100-year old Brickyard sharing the weekend with the Sprint Cup series.

Scott Pruett, currently a Grand-Am driver, tested a sports car on the road course and has raced in the Indianapolis 500 four times, with a best finish of 10th back in 1989. After a move from IndyCar to NASCAR, he ran the Brickyard 400 twice, finishing 10th in 2000.

"This is huge for the sport, for our team and it's huge for me personally," said Pruett."When we had the opportunity to go and test at Indy in 2009, it was incredible to go back.

"After racing Indy Cars and NASCARs at Indianapolis, now to get the opportunity to go there with GRAND-AM... It's one of those absolute pinnacles of racing."

Although Formula One and Moto GP have used the road circuit before, never before has an oval series raced on the same weekend. It will a first in IMS history.

The Nationwide series will take to the track for practice on Thursday July 26th, while the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series and Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge practice, qualifying and races will be a one-day show at the 13-turn road course on Friday.

On Saturday it’s back to NASCAR with Nationwide practice qualifying and race. The Sprint Cup cars will also practice and qualify on Saturday.

The 19th annual Brickyard 400 for the Sprint Cup Series will race on the oval on Sunday.
