New 7-speed DSG transmission from VW

Volkswagen is preparing to introduce a completely new version of its famed Direct-Shift-Gearbox (DSG).
For starters, the new gearbox will carry 7 gears instead of 6. The genius behind the DSG is its twin-clutch setup. The 6-speed featured a wet-clutch layout whereas now, the clutches will run in a dry environment. This results in a reduction of the quantity of oil required to lubricate and cool the transmission's inner-workings from 7 litres to 1.7 litres. The total weight of the transmission is down to 79 kg including the dual-mass flywheel and the entire unit is fairly compact. It measures only 369 mm in total length. With the addition of a 7th gear, Volkswagen has managed to reduce the first gear's ratio for better acceleration. At the other end of the shaft, the 7th gear acts as a dedicated overdrive, improving fuel economy and overall comfort levels. The compactness of the transmission means that it will fit in nearly all of Volkswagen's cars; from the Polo to the Passat. The new DSG will first be available at the end of this year in most European markets.
