Mitsubishi Motors had planned three new model launches in its domestic market during financial year 2006. The first was the eK duo (wagon and

sports car) and the second was the new Pajero, a crossover-type SUV. Both have been a big hit with customers, and further success is expected with the new Delica D:5 mono-box minivan. This third new model, largely derived from the D:5 Concept showcased at the last Tokyo Auto Show, was recently announced by the Japanese automaker. Its official arrival in showrooms is due early in 2007.

Why D:5? Simple: this is the fifth generation of the Delica, a series that began way back in 1968. The Delica D:5 has been developed to "fuse the comfort of a minivan with the powerful performance of an SUV." One thing's for sure: the design is years ahead of its time. Moreover, the minivan offers a spacious interior that can comfortably seat 8 passengers, a wide variety of utility features, and a strong body structure with comprehensive safety fittings. Fuel economy and all-round performance (on-road and off-road) are also said to be excellent thanks to a 2.4-liter MIVEC engine mated to an electronically controlled 4WD system. Don't expect the Delica D:5 to be available in North America.
