Bigger, Faster, Cleaner and Less Expensive Overall

Today, April 22, is designated 'Earth Day,' a day in which millions of people around the world take action to try and change the environment and the world. Individuals collaborate and think of ways to make our earthly home cleaner and greener. But it's not just individuals who make an effort; car companies are beginning to make an effort as well.
This year at the New York International Auto Show, Toyota lowered its standards, a positive thing when it comes to emissions. The upcoming Prius is packed with new hybrid technology that allows it to be larger, faster and greener in comparison with the current model. The 2004 model will also save the buyer some 'green' because it offers more for about the same price as the older version. The current base price of the Prius is $29,696 CDN ($20,480 USD) including the destination fee.

Not arriving in time for 'Earth Day' but in dealerships this fall, the 5-door liftback has the interior space of a midsized sedan. With a wheelbase lengthened by 152 mm (6 in), an overall length augmented by 127 mm (5 in), and 25 mm (1 in) taller than the current Prius, the new and improved hybrid will reach a 0 to 96 km/h (60 mph) in a remarkable 10 seconds. In addition, the Prius will average combined highway and city fuel economy of 6.9 L/100 km (55 mpg) up from 7.9 L/100 km (48 mpg) in the current model. Toyota has also split atoms when it comes to electric motors. The new 50-kilowatt electric motor operates at 500 volts for increased torque and power.
