Saturn will soon be joining other automakers in a new trend to spice up existing products with OEM and aftermarket performance and styling mods, available right from the dealership floor.

A performance-tuned VUE compact SUV will debut at the New York International Auto Show next week, the initial entry in Saturn's new Red Line series. It will feature distinct aerodynamic body modifications, a lowered ride height, sport-tuned suspension and steering plus an 18-inch wheel and tire package. Both front and all-wheel drive versions will be offered.

No specifics have been offered regarding the Saturn ION Coupe Red Line edition, but it's sure to follow the VUE with more power and improved handling dynamics. Its performance enhancing aerodynamic aids are easy to see though. (Photo: General Motors)

The already powerful optional 3.0-L V6 will get pumped up to 250-hp and 242 lb-ft of torque, a performance upgrade that will be available in non-Red Line VUEs in 2004 when this special feature model also appears.

The next vehicle in the series will be Saturn's hot little ION coupe, set to be ready early next year. Approximately 5,000 ION Red Lines will be made available in the U.S. while VUE Red Lines will initially be kept to about 3,000 units. No official Canadian availability announcement has been made. Pricing is also not yet determined.
