Nissan engineers draw inspiration from... fish!

By ,

Nissan is currently working on collision-avoidance technologies using seven small robots whose behaviour is inspired by the way fish swim.

Called EPOROs, or zero emission robot car concepts, these little creatures were developed in 2009 by engineer Susumu Fujita. Similar to fish, which move in schools, in streams, and avoid obstacles, they run on electricity and use algorithms to move in harmony and in solitude.

The EPOROs recently visited the United States for the first time, making their debut at the newly minted Nissan Research Center – Silicon Valley (NRC-SV).

While Nissan's ultimate goal is to build collision-free vehicles, the new technologies used in EPOROs also aim to improve migration efficiency of a group of vehicles and contribute to an environmentally friendly and traffic jam-free driving environment.
