Nuclear physics to see engine oil flow

Nissan has teamed up with the Japanese Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) to develop a neutron imaging system that will display the flow of oil in an engine operating at high speed. This will be a first worldwide.
The system uses neutrography and a high-speed imaging technology to demonstrate the workings inside the engine. This revolutionary system will allow us to capture dynamic events and study the behaviour of oil as it circulates in an engine or drive train.The goal of this discovery is to determine the causes of friction loss by studying oil flow, which will enable the creation of engines with optimal oil circulation. What's more, these engines will feature a minimal friction rating, lower fuel consumption and greatly reduced CO2 emissions.In accordance with its 2010 green program, Nissan will continue the research and development of new technologies and innovative products that will reduce carbon dioxide emissions. photo: Japanese Atomic Energy Agency
