Perfect 10? Hyundai working on 10-speed 'box

By ,

The relentless quest for fuel efficiency is driving automakers to push the technological envelope. A prime example is Hyundai, which is currently working on a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Developed entirely in-house, the unit will make its debut in the Korean brand's luxury models, namely the Genesis and Equus sedans. The official release date has yet to be confirmed, but reports indicate that it could appear as early as in 2014.

The two aforementioned models already feature an 8-speed autobox. Adding two extra gears will further help Hyundai meet stricter fuel economy standards.

The news has raised more than a few eyebrows, since many automakers (including Chrysler) are presently busy with new 8-speed transmissions.
