Polestar 2 Production Ends with Successor Planned for 2027 Polestar’s Canadian division continues to operate in a particular North American context, given that Polestar has been forced out of the U.S. market.

Polestar has brought production of the first-generation Polestar 2 electric fastback to a close at its manufacturing facility in Luqiao, China.

A pioneering chapter concludes
The Polestar 2 was the first model produced by the Swedish electric performance brand and helped put it on the map. All told, Polestar built around 200,000 units of its EV worldwide across a six-year production cycle spanning the 2020-to-2026 model-years.

Originally previewed as the Volvo 40.2 concept before launching under the Polestar banner, the electric sedan underwent continuous aesthetic and mechanical revisions to remain competitive against rival EV options such as the Tesla Model 3. A notable engineering shift occurred for the 2024 model-year, when entry-level variants transitioned from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive, while top-tier dual-motor models retained all-wheel drive.

In Canada, Quebec served as the primary sales region, accounting for more than 50 percent of total national volume. For the 2027 model-year in the Canadian market, the lineup was streamlined to a single, fully optioned Dual Motor AWD variant priced at $69,900 CAD. With total output pegged at 416 hp and 546 lb-ft of torque, it can do the 0-100 km/h trick in 4.5 seconds and delivers an estimated driving range of 447 km.

The Polestar Formula 2030 concept

Next-generation model confirmed for 2027
The end of the first-generation Polestar 2 doesn’t mean the nameplate is going away. Polestar confirmed some time ago that a completely redesigned second-generation model is coming in the first half of 2027, with assembly remaining in China.

The upcoming model will mark the first production vehicle styled by the brand’s new design boss Philipp Römers, who joined the company in early 2025. The company has said the exterior styling will incorporate design cues previewed by the Formula 2030 concept, including the brand's signature Dual Blade headlight signature. It will be slightly longer than the outgoing 4.6-metre model.

The Gen 2 fastback forms a core element of Polestar’s strategy to achieve 100,000 annual global sales by the end of the decade.

Until the arrival of the next Polestar 2, Polestar Canada’s ongoing sales mix will centre on the Polestar 3 midsize SUV, the Polestar 4 fastback crossover and the upcoming Polestar 5 GT sedan.

Only in Canada, you say?
Recall that the Canadian division continues to operate in a particular North American context, given that Polestar was effectively forced out of the United States market following regulatory rulings by the U.S. government. Those rulings targeted vehicle hardware and software connected to Chinese ownership or supply chains. Because Polestar is controlled by China’s Geely Holding Group, the ruling effectively bans the sale of new Polestar vehicles in the U.S. starting with the 2027 model-year.
