Porsche Plans to Sell 1,500 CAD$630,000 Supercars

Are the rich getting richer? Porsche's 1,500 unit sales plans for its CAD$630,000 Carrera GT might seem a little bullish to some, but not so to CEO Wendelin Wiedeking.
"Our original plan was to sell at least 1,000 units required to make this car economically feasible," Wiedeking stated. "We did find 1,000 customers and many have made substantial down payments."

Officially unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show earlier this month, the Carrera GT gets a 612-hp 5.7-L non-aspirated V10 placed mid-ship, right behind the driver and passenger. Its 9.9 second zero to 200 km/h and terminal velocity of 330 km/h put it into a rarified performance bracket, helped along by lightweight carbon fiber reinforced plastic, magnesium and ceramic components. Its industry first monocoque chassis reduces weight while improving body rigidity.
The car will be built at Porsche's Leipzig, Germany facility with first examples reaching North American customers this fall. Its limited edition production will be finalized by December 2005.
