Québec driver's permit proposed price increase

By ,

Those that thought that we were paying too much for our right to drive will be sorely disappointed to learn that, starting next year, the cost of driving will rise considerably.Starting January 1st of next year, all permit renewals will be done on a yearly basis as opposed to every two years. Those that are renewing in the course of 2007 will pay the usual $86 for a period of two years. However, in 2009, these people will have to add the un-paid increase to the price of the renewal. The fee swells break down as follows: Our insurance contribution will rise from the actual $23 to $35 in 2008. By 2009, the rate will increase to $48 and will fix itself at $61 in 2010. Administration costs will continue to be $4 as they are presently however, instead of being paid every two years; it will be expected every year. After all is said and done, the price of the actual permit will be $86, payable every year though. Why the rate hikes? Well, it is quite simple actually; the public group is in the hole $500 million. I guess it is up to us to pay...The ADQ (l'Action démocratique du Québec) opposes this type of increase. They are suggesting a more gradual and foreseeable fee escalation.
