Ram is simplifying its powertrain lineup for the 2027 model year by dropping the eTorque mild-hybrid system and automatic engine stop-start feature from its 5.7L Hemi V8.
First introduced in 2019 alongside the current-generation Ram 1500, eTorque replaced a conventional alternator with a 48-volt motor-generator. Designed to smooth out engine restarts, deliver a low-end torque boost and modestly improve fuel economy, the system was made standard when Ram re-introduced the Hemi V8 for 2026.
However, the technology proved unpopular among traditional truck buyers who disliked automatic engine shut-offs at traffic lights and remained skeptical of hybridized hardware in full-size pickups.
A gradual withdrawal
The automaker confirmed that the transition will be gradual. A limited number of early 2027 Ram 1500 models will still roll off assembly lines with the mild-hybrid setup before non-eTorque trucks begin arriving at dealerships in the autumn.
Beyond losing the 48-volt battery pack and stop-start functionality, the 5.7L Hemi V8 will retain its familiar 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque, along with its Multi-Displacement System (MDS) cylinder deactivation.
A changed regulatory environment
The shift follows recent regulatory rollbacks by the U.S. government, which eliminated compliance credits that previously incentivised automakers to install auto stop-start systems to meet emissions targets. With those penalties removed, Ram can cater directly to customer demand without facing regulatory drawbacks.
The move further shifts Ram’s focus back toward traditional high-output performance, following the revival of the supercharged TRX and the addition of special-edition Rumble Bee models.
Removing eTorque gives V8 buyers a classic, non-electrified configuration alongside a diverse 2027 engine portfolio, which continues to feature the 3.6L Pentastar V6, Hurricane twin-turbo inline-6 and 777-hp supercharged 6.2L Hemi.
Ram notes that eTorque availability could still vary across specific international markets, though Canadian market specifications for 2027 remain unconfirmed.
