Recall: 2011-2013 Chevrolet Volt EV idling could be a problem

By ,

GM is in the process of preparing and issuing a recall that will affect all Chevrolet Volts from the 2011 to 2013 model years in Canada and in the United States.

The situation that has created the need for the recall is, in a word, interesting.

As the Volt is an EV, it is possible that its driver/owner omits to “turn off” the car upon exiting it. The car thus remains “on” which in turn drains the battery in time. The Volt, being a range extended EV, will then start its internal combustion engine in order to recharge its battery.

The problem arises if the car is parked in a garage or enclosed space where carbon monoxide could build up and potentially cause injury.

The fix will involve a software upgrade that will limit the Volt’s idling time.
