Hyundai is recalling 5,360 units of its 2026 Ioniq 9 electric SUV in the U.S. due to a software glitch that can affect the functioning in the second-row power-folding seats, in a potentially dangerous way.
The issue is similar to the one that led to a recall of and stop-sale order on the Hyundai Palisade SUV last year after a fatality.
The safety recall applies to 2026 Ioniq 9 models in the higher-tier Limited, Calligraphy and Calligraphy Design trims, with Hyundai estimating that 100 percent of the recalled population has the fault.
As of now, there is no confirmation on the number of vehicles in Canada that may be recalled.
The problem
According to documentation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the affected vehicles may fail to detect an occupant or object, allowing the seat mechanism to continue moving and potentially trapping or crushing a passenger.
The issue centers on the anti-pinch functionality failing to engage during automatic folding and stowing operations.
Following a three-month investigation prompted by five consumer complaints, during which it received two reports of minor injuries, Hyundai identified the software logic flaw present in the Ioniq 9.
This new recall follows heightened scrutiny surrounding Hyundai's power-seat systems after a fatal accident in Ohio in March 2026 involving a Palisade SUV, which prompted subsequent recalls for both the Palisade and the Kia Telluride.
The solution
To resolve the issue, Hyundai dealers will inspect the vehicles and install updated Seat Controller software free of charge. Owners enrolled in Hyundai’s Bluelink service can also receive the fix via an over-the-air (OTA) software update that revises the occupant detection and anti-pinch protection logic.
Hyundai is advising owners to exercise extreme caution when using the second-row power-folding seats until the software update is installed. The manufacturer specifically urges drivers to keep children away from the rear seating area while operating the mechanism.
