Just like with people, it’s pretty much impossible not to feel impressed in the presence of a car that’s over 100 years old. When that car is one of only three still in existence, the experience becomes almost spiritual.

When produced, this Oldsmobile features a 471-cc 4-cylinder engine that delivered an awesome-for-the-time 50 hp.

Its extreme rarity guaranteed a high selling price, and sure enough the winning bid was $450,000, which climbed to $495,000 with the fees attached.

This Packard, which sold at the auction for $110,000, might seem almost ordinary in comparison with some others, but it stood out for the original condition it remains in. What’s important to know is that the original owner held on to it for 42 years while taking extremely good care of it.

Eventually the car did change hands a few times, but always it was carefully maintained, and the odometer reads only 29,924 miles.

It’s also a prize-winning car: in 2009 it was honoured at the celebrated Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach in the category of non-restored pre-war cars that were actually driven in the real world.
