Ford is currently in the lead in terms of total sales for 2010, and the month of September helped them extend that lead.
26,450 Ford vehicles drove off dealer lots last month, compared with 16,140 in September 2009, an increase of 64%. Good deals were easy to find on Ford showroom floors; their Employee Pricing event, combined with up to $3,000 in exchange for your old clunker and various other rebate programs enticed many people to buy a Ford.
As usual, the premium brands enjoyed successful sales last month compared to September 2009, including Porsche (+46%), MINI (+33%), Acura (+30%), Land Rover (+30%), Audi (+18%), Infiniti (+17%) and Jaguar (+13%).
The Korean brands also continue their upward ascension: Hyundai reported a 12% increase while Kia increased their September sales by 5% compared to the same period last year.
Some brands, though, continue their struggle. September sales for General Motors are down 24% compared to last year, while Lexus (-13%), Toyota (-18%), smart (-54%) and Mitsubishi (-20%) are still sliding. Suzuki’s lack of new products translates into a decrease in sales by 37% for September.
Overall, light vehicle sales are up 4.3% in September 2010 compared to September 2009. While an increase is welcome, 2009 was actually a bad year for the automotive industry, so this is a very modest increase. In addition, light trucks are seriously starting to outsell cars, as 54% of total 2010 sales to date are pickups, SUVs and crossovers.
