In an effort to make its Solara line of convertibles more attractive to more buyers, Toyota Canada has launched a new entry-level trim for the 2006 model year. That would be the SE V6 model with an MSRP of $34,700, joining the better-equipped SLE V6 at $39,200, and both models are probably already available for consumer consideration now.

In general, says Tony Wearing, who is one of Toyota Canada's three managing directors, ''Every aspect of the 2006 Solara Convertible is geared towards driving fun. Customers get a great convertible, no matter which Solara they buy. Both trim levels have the same sleek design, the same sophisticated performance, and give the same exhilarating top-down driving experience.''Wearing points out that both models get the ''responsive'' 3.3-litre, 24-valve, DOHC V-6 that sends 225 hp at 5,600 rpm and 240 lb-ft of torque at 3,600 rpm to the car's front wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission. The gated sequential multi-mode shifter on that transmission ''adds style to the interior and provides an extra element of sporty driving fun,'' Wearing notes, ''letting drivers choose either fully automatic operation or electronic 'manual' gear selection.''

Of course both models also get a power retractable roof, but they also get an appearance package that includes coloured bumpers and rear spoiler, a chrome tailpipe, and coloured mirrors and door handles.''Designed and built in North America specifically to suit North American tastes,'' Wearing says, ''the Solara Convertible incorporates the power, quality and safety built into the Solara Coupe, but adds unique safety features designed to meet the specific needs of a convertible body.''On the comfort and convenience front, Wearing says, ''the refined sophistication of Solara's design translates into an inviting, intelligently-equipped cabin distinguished by a sense of spaciousness and controls designed to provide maximum visibility and usability.'' The list of standard features in the Solara SE V6 Convertible includes:
  • a seven-speaker JBL audio system with six-disc changer and steering wheel audio controls
  • power driver's seat
  • air conditioning with clean air filter and rear seat ducts
  • power windows with auto down for driver
  • keyless entry with lockout protection
