Speedcar: The end of the road

By ,

According to web site italiaracing.net, the Speedcar series has pulled the plug on their operations after just two seasons.

Apparently, the operating costs were way too high.

The organisers wanted to bring NASCAR racing in Asia in the form of a Winter Series with races held in countries such as Dubai, Indonesia and Bahrain.

The cars were based on Nationwide racers powered by hi-output V-8 engines, and the series managed to attract some big former F1 drivers such as Jacques Villeneuve , Jean Alesi and Heinz-Harald Frenzen.

But in February of this year, it became evident that the series was running into financial problems. Their web site was no longer active, and some competitors decided not to compete in the final two events.

Johnny Hebert won the title in 2008, and Gianni Morbidelli claimed the crown this year.
