Former world ski champion and Dakar Rally winner Luc Alphand has been seriously injured in a crash during a motorcycle rally in France.
The 43-year-old underwent an operation on his C7 and T1 vertebrea in Clermont Ferrand on Monday, the delicate surgery being performed by doctor Jean Chazal.
The hospital later issued a press release stating that the operation had been successful but that Alphand would have to remain in hospital for up to 10 days.
"Post-operation observations appear to be favourable on all fronts," read the statement.
"His spine is stable and the patient is in a good condition neurologically. He will be in hospital for between a week and 10 days.”
“On Wednedsay morning, Luc was able, under the supervision of the doctors, to walk a little bit in his room. He was delighted to realised that all his limbs were working correctly. It was a huge boost of his morale! Now, he needs to rest as much as possible,” said Christian Lavieille, a long-time friend of Alphand.
