BMW will soon have a new rival to the Porsche Cayman and the Audi TT RS. According to Auto Express, the new M2 coupe will spearhead the M division’s ambitious future product offensive.

The car’s stunning body is heavily inspired by the BMW Vision ConnectedDrive concept roadster; could a droptop M2 also be in the plans?

The front-engine, rear-wheel drive 2 Series is due in 2014, using a platform called F21. Two powerplants are said to be in testing; a 350-hp, twin-turbo 3.0-litre six and a tri-turbo inline-six. The M2 coupe will also benefit from the M3’s brakes and dual-clutch transmission, and will use lightweight polycarbonate material that will also be featured on the company’s upcoming i3 and i8 models.

The M2 coupe is expected to arrive in 2015. As for other M division products, a new M3 is obviously in the works, but we should see an X3 M unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show this September. A supercar to battle the likes of the Lamborghini Aventador is also under consideration.
