Tesla Model S priced from $57,400 in the US Lavish new electric sedan to give the auto industry an electroshock in 2012

Tesla Motors has announced the US pricing for its highly anticipated premium electric sedan. Apparently, 2012 will be ''The Year of Model S'', and judging by the information released this week, we would have to agree.

As of next summer, Tesla will launch the Model S with an 85 kWh battery for $76,400 US (not counting the federal tax credit of $7,500). Offering a range of 482 kilometres, it will sprint from 0 to 96 km/h in 5.6 seconds before reaching a top speed of 201 km/h.

A 60 kWh version will follow in the fall at $67,400 US. This one will have a range of 370 kilometres, a 0-96 km/h acceleration time of 5.9 seconds, and a top speed of 193 km/h.

Finally, the base Tesla Model S will debut next winter with a 40 kWh battery. Starting at $57,400 US, it will still provide decent range (257 km), sprints (6.5 seconds), and top speed (177 km/h).

All three Model S will come standard with a gigantic 17'' touchscreen, 19'' alloy wheels, , microfiber cloth seats, 200 watts of premium sound, and a universal mobile connecter with three adapters.

The batteries will be covered by an 8-year warranty and, in the case of the 85 kWh batteries, with no mileage limitations. This is a first in the auto industry.

A sportier variant of the Tesla Model S 85 kWh will also hit the market in mid-2012. Starting at $87,400 US, the Model S Performance will accelerate from 0 to 96 km/h in 4.4 seconds, faster than a Porsche 911 Carrera. It will feature an active air suspension, sport-tuned traction control, as well as 21'' wheels and high-performance tires.

The interior of the Model S Performance will stand out with Nappa leather (black, tan, or grey) and Alcantara accents.
