Japanese carmakers have a long history of making delicious cars only to eventually take them away from us.
However frustrating that may be, the fact that they keep hinting that they will bring them back without ever really doing so is enough to get car enthusiasts to slit their wrists, or go mental.
Other than the Acura NSX , the next Mazda RX-7 is without a doubt one of the most anticipated returns in the Japanese sports car business. The outgoing RX-8 was good, but never got the car-nut collective’s juices flowing as did the previous FD RX-7.
I think we should thank Subaru and Toyota for their BRZ and FR-S , as Mazda’s focus for the next RX-7 will have less weight and complex technology, and feature an emphasis on driver involvement. Although weight is expected to hover around that of the Subayota cars, pricing will more than likely linger in the vicinity of the Nissan 370Z and Volkswagen Golf R.
The plan seems to be that the new Mazda RX-7 will arrive sometime for the 2017 model year. Although still far off, the Hiroshima-based car manufacturer says that their new 16X Rotary engine is the most probable source of motivation for their next sports car. Turbocharging is a possibility, but only time will tell.
This new engine is expected to meet all emissions by the time it arrives and should be good for a solid 300 hp. Although not much on paper, a favourable power-to-weight ratio can do wonders. Said weight reduction will be achieved through the use of lots of aluminum.
Mazda's first rotary-powered car, the Cosmo Sport, was introduced in 1967. 2017 therefore marks the 50th anniversary of the rotary engine for Mazda, and so the party and car should be excellent.
