The Mazda RX-8 with hydrogen rotary engine on Norwegian roads

By ,

A Mazda RX-8 equipped with a hydrogen-powered rotary engine will take to the Norwegian roads. Mazda and HyNor, the Norwegian national hydrogen project responsible for establishing a clean transportation system based on hydrogen, will jointly evaluate its performance. With the arrival of its 2009 fiscal year and after having assessed the vehicle's performance on Norway's roads, the Japanese manufacturer will supply 30 hydrogen-powered RX-8s that will be used on a daily basis for the HyNor project.
Norwegian authorities are building an infrastructure that will allow these vehicles to refuel on the road between Oslo and Stavanger over a 580-kilometre distance. The project will revolutionize the Norwegian transportation industry, combining buses, taxis, personal vehicles and the various urban, intercity, regional and long-distance transportation systems. This is the first time a vehicle powered by a hydrogen rotary engine will be tested outside Japan. photo: Mazda
