Summer is more often than not the time when we take our cars for long trips into the countryside or to our favourite vacation spot. On today's segment we will go over a few suggestions and tips before you hit the road. The condition of the family vehicle can easily make or break the vacation. The first thing to do is very important especially if the vehicle is getting on in age. A trip to your regular garage can save time, money and headaches. Get an oil change, a mechanical inspection as well as tire verification, including the all-important spare. Nothing ruins a trip like a car breaking down on the road.Everyone knows that it can get really hot out there in the summer and therefore, the A/C system should be verified. Here is what else should be on the list: while at the garage, have them check the condition of the brakes and suspension components. A visual inspection of the engine, radiator and hoses could prevent expensive and annoying failures on the road such as overheating. There are many gadgets such as a GPS system that are available to travellers to help them along their way. Here are a few other suggestions: purchase a small air compressor that plugs into a 12v outlet and a can of tire inflator/sealant. These two items should be able to help you get to the nearest garage without having to pay for towing. A first aid kit would also be a good idea. Many stores actually sell complete car kits with the items I have just suggested. If you don't have a GPS system, I would also strongly recommend getting a map...In closing, try and keep in mind what you have just read. If you are driving down to your vacation spot, the car is very important. Secondly, the moment you feel tired at wheel, pull over even if you find yourself only an hour away from your destination. It is useless and very dangerous to take a chance and fall asleep at the wheel. Lastly, try and get a Passport if you will be travelling to the US, even though it is not mandatory. At least bring an original copy of your birth certificate. Last winter, my trip to Detroit almost went very sour as I had neither. Happy motoring and be safe.
