1. Enter the Volt
And then the Chevrolet Volt was born. First introduced and unveiled in 2007 at the North American International Auto Show, the Chevy Volt took everyone's breath away. From its out-of-this world design concept to the fact that it was a car we could plug in, the Volt had everyone talking and had Chevrolet and GM in the limelight heading into a nasty recession just a few years later.
General Motors, and by association Chevy, has had some pretty amazing contributions to the automotive industry over the decades. While some might look at the American automakers and think they're still struggling from the recession, keep in mind that our dip in the economy is probably not the biggest obstacle they've ever overcome. From creating vehicles for WWII, involvement with the Nazis (betcha didn't know that either) and dealing with technology that was clearly ahead of its time and seen as controversial and perhaps a bit too forward-thinking for the business world (read: the EV1 and oil companies) and so were seen as failures, Chevy has seen it all. All in all, if it weren't for the likes of Chevrolet, we'd likely not be where we are today in the auto industry or seeing the cars we are today on the road, like the brand-new Sonic.
