You would have thought the Highlander would have been placed higher on our list, but that it isn’t is largely due to the fact that 2019 was the last year of the model before its renewal. The new Highlander is a vastly improved model, so 2020 should be much kinder to it.

Still, the outgoing edition of Toyota's midsize SUV did manage to attract 13,811 buyers here in Canada. It did even better with our American neighbours, selling a whopping 239,437 units for second place in the segment.

With the new version that showed up this year, including an even more frugal hybrid variant, it's certain to rank better than seventh when the numbers are tallied up for this most unusual 2020 year.
