4 – 2017 Mazda3: Under the sign of refinement

Far from resting on its laurels, Mazda is bringing a host of refinements to the 2017 generation of its Mazda3 lineup, which will include a sedan and a 5-door version known as the Sport.

We freely admit that this model has always been a unanimous choice among our team of journalists, as much for its overall conception as for the driving pleasure it offers. For 2017, Mazda has introduced some aesthetic improvements to the Mazda3 sedan and Sport models, most notably via a slightly modified front grille and rear fender. Also newly redesigned is the look of the 18-inch alloy wheels included with the GT version.

The interior has also been subject to some tweaks, with Mazda displaying a more discerning control over the choice of plastic, cloth and leather materials. The inclusion of electric brakes also serves to improve space in the cabin.

Take note that the lineup will be available in three new colours: Machine Grey Metallic, Eternal Blue Mica and Sonic Silver Metallic.

Remarkable out on the road...

On mountainous and small country roads, the 2017 Mazda3 pretty much seduced us!

Essentially the same as before, the two versions of the SKYACTIV motor are well adapted to the car, providing crisp acceleration, sufficient responsiveness when passing and, especially, great fuel economy. Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology is a response to the greening of the marketplace, and one which offers an alternative to hybrid. Expect fuel consumption of between 6L and 7L per 100 km. Both versions offer 6-speed transmissions that perform with admirable gusto.

There’s also the G-Vectoring Control system offered standard; developed from the SKYACTIV-VEHICLE-DYNAMICSS technology, it varies the engine’s torque to optimize the load applied to each wheel. This has had the effect of enhancing the car’s already formidable road grip and making Mazda’s trademark thrilling driving experience even more exhilarating.

The 2017 Mazda3 also surprised us in terms of its interior noise, or more precisely the lack thereof. The carmaker’s engineers have clearly been applying themselves to resolving what had been a weak point in previous models. This has helped solidify the Mazda3 range of cars as among the finest in its class when it comes to styling, road handling and comfort.

Congratulations to Mazda’s design and engineering teams.
