In 2019, U.S. automaker General Motors announced it was ending production of the Chevy Volt, currently into its second generation. That’s a sad development, but it doesn’t, change the fact that the Volt represents a milestone in the recent history of green automobiles. The first plug-in hybrid model destined for the masses, the sedan allows for extensive all-electric driving - perfect for those with short home-work commutes. And no need to go rent a car if you’re heading on the occasional longer road trip: the combustion engine gets you there, plus it recharges the electric-motor battery along the way. It should be possible to come in under the $15,000 budget for a 2011 or 2012 model.
