Toyota aims for Prius to become top seller in U.S. by 2020

Toyota is nowhere near posting skyrocketing sales numbers, yet the executives of the Japanese manufacturer aim to make the Prius their top seller in the United States by 2020.

In a call with analysts on Monday, Bob Carter, Toyota's group vice president for U.S. sales, said: ''We will end the decade with Prius being the No. 1 nameplate in the industry. The Camry will be a close second, and that's not because there will be a drop in Camry sales''.

That's one ambitious goal and Toyota has its work cut out with strong opposition from the highly-promising Chevrolet Volt and Nissan LEAF. That's probably why the company simultaneously announced a wagon variant of the popular hybrid for next week's NAIAS in Detroit.
