And one year off becomes two. The return of the Volkswagen ID. Buzz to U.S. dealerships will have to wait some more. Originally planned for a return in fall of 2026 as a 2027 model, the electric minivan is now set to come back during the first half of 2027 for the 2028 model-year. Volkswagen informed its American dealers of the change of planson 24 September, reports Automotive News.
This marks a second consecutive model year without a new ID. Buzz in the United States. Volkswagen had already decided to skip 2026 in both the U.S. and Canada, following the vehicle's launch at the end of 2024. For all that, the manufacturer is not announcing the cancellation of the model.
Several changes at once for 2028
Modifications announced in the spring for the 2027 version are thus now deferred to the 2028 model. Those include physical steering wheel controls, compatibility with the North American Charging Standard (NACS), and a Tourer variant tailored for camping enthusiasts. Volkswagen had also planned to restrict exterior colour options to two-tone combinations.
According to Automotive News, the delay will allow for a software update, vehicle-to-load capabilities to power electrical appliances, and digital key integration. Volkswagen promised its dealers further details in the coming months. The automaker did not clarify whether the battery or range figures would change.
A rocky start to life
Built in Germany, the ID. Buzz has had a rocky existence to date in the U.S. market. Its high price tag and range of less than 400 km rank among the main reasons cited for its weak sales showing. Piled on top of those factors came recalls and temporary stop-sale orders.
Based on figures reported by Automotive News, Volkswagen delivered 6,140 ID. Buzz units in the U.S. in 2025, its first full year in the market, followed by 2,481 in the first half of 2026. The automaker is still working to clear remaining 2025 model-year inventory.
Take note that the new timeline communicated to dealers applies to the U.S. Volkswagen Canada still displays the 2025 ID. Buzz on its website; no Canadian return date for 2027 or for 2028 has been confirmed.
