Volkswagen invests $1 billion in Mexico

German automaker Volkswagen is on a real hot streak. After announcing their goal of becoming the number one manufacturer in the world within the next 10 years, executives now have confirmed plans to invest $1 billion in the Mexican plant where the New Beetle, Jetta and Bora (the latter not available in Canada) are currently being produced.

According to information made public, the investment would allow for the start of a new production as early as March 2010. We still don’t know if it will be the next-generation New Beetle, which made various appearances in concept form over the past few years.

For Mexico, the decision by VW comes as a big breath of fresh air. VW is the second-largest car maker in the country but had to cut production by 22 percent due to a significant sales drop in North America.

That’s the second major plant announcement made by the people’s car company since last spring. In May, an all-new assembly plant in Chattanooga, TN, began operations. According to journalists who toured the construction site, this facility will mainly serve for the production of the next-generation Passat, which is scheduled for 2010.

The goal of Volkswagen in North America is to increase sales threefold by 2018. Looks like they’re taking all means necessary to get there.
