Volkswagen moving Up! in the city car segment

By ,

A world premiere date for the VW's foray into the city-car market has been leaked. The German automakers will debut their Up! vehicle in Paris on August 22 and then the vehicle will be present at the Frankfurt Auto Show the following month. The 3-door hatch is scheduled for an official release at the end of 2011.

VW's city car is a 5-seater with a 1.0L gas engine and a 1.2L diesel – and an all-electric version is said to follow shortly. In direct competition with cars like the Scion iQ, the VW Up! is half the size of the VW Golf and is estimated to cost approximately $10,000.

Cute and compact, this venture in the city-car market shows that small cars are here to stay and that smaller really is better nowadays. How the VW will stack up against the competition is yet to be seen, but we're betting it will do quite well, especially in the Euro market.
