Nissan North America Inc. announced that they will voluntarily replace the airbags in all 1994 and early 1995 Altima models. However, the replacement airbag will not have the same potency and strength when inflated in a crash. Letters to Altima purchasers will be sent out starting next week.

According to Nissan and the National Highway Safety Administration, buyers reported approximately 79 head or eye injuries in conjunction with the inflation of passenger airbags.

About 249,695 Altima's were produced worldwide and about 198,000 are still believed to be on the road.

No comment was made in regards to how much the Japanese automaker will spend on the airbag recall.
