Volvo unveils new 40 series concept cars

By ,

Volvo has just unveiled the first two concepts of its brand new 40 series, a move that puts the Swedish brand in a bold new direction and marks the official launch of its global small car strategy.

The idea with Volvo’s 40 series is to combine stylish exterior and interior design with industry-leading connectivity, electrification, and autonomous drive technologies. The newly revealed concepts are the first vehicles built around the new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), which has been specially created for smaller Volvo cars.

“Each member of our product family has its own distinct character, just like the members of a real family,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President of Design at Volvo Car Group. “CMA has helped us capture something special, something youthful in our new concept cars. They have an energy, a disruptive and engaging urban character that makes them stand out amongst the crowd. This is the flavour of small Volvos to come.”

As previously reported, Volvo’s new global small car range will include a fully electric vehicle as well as Twin Engine plug-in hybrid variants. Production of the first 40 series models is expected to begin in 2017.
