The latest wrinkle in the VW Jetta lineup for 2006 is an "enthusiast's" model, and along with a more aggressive look it actually gets a fairly decent engine and some other worthwhile mechanical features.Consumers are not to assume, however, that this is a no-holds-barred performance version of the new Jetta. VW is quick to point out that it's the "answer to drivers who seek the sporty attitude, style and driving dynamics of an Autobahn-bred performance sedan with the everyday practicality of a large four-door compact, all at a solid Volkswagen value that offers a lot of car for the money."What that last part means exactly is not yet known, since VW Canada has not released an MSRP for the 2006 Jetta GLI. But the 2005 Jetta GLI with a 1.8-litre turbo engine and other features was $32,670, so that should provide a frame of reference.

The Mexican-built Jetta GLI is said to "infuse the very best of Volkswagen's unique driving pleasure sought by the automaker's enthusiasts everywhere into the solid Jetta lineup."Like all Jettas launched in 2005, the new GLI is the product of a complete redesign and is thus bigger than previous Jetta GLI models in nearly every dimension, including occupant space, legroom and trunk volume. Exterior and interior design features separate it from its Jetta siblings and "clearly distinguish it as a very performance-minded alternative in the lineup." Indeed, VW believes that the "new styling incorporates several sporty updates that give the GLI a more aggressive overall presence than any Jetta before it."The heart of the 2006 GLI is VW's new 2.0 T turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which produces 200 hp from 5,500 to 6,000 rpm and 207 ft-lbs of torque from 1,800 to 4,700 rpm.

With the six-speed manual transmission that comes standard on the new GLI, it should accelerate from 0 to 100 kmh in a shade under seven seconds. The transverse, front-mount engine incorporates dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, and maintenance-free hydraulic lifters "for smooth, worry-free operation."A fully electronic engine management system includes drive-by-wire throttle control and direct-injection for optimal fuel combustion, which increases power, improves efficiency, and reduces emissions.
