VW, Chrysler and Ford recall thousands of cars in Canada

By ,

Volkswagen Canada has just recalled 37,000 vehicles due to potential fuel leakage that might cause a fire. The 2007 to 2009 Golf, Jetta and Jetta Sportwagen, the 2006 Rabbit as well as the 2006 to 2010 Beetle and Beetle Cabriolet have been targeted.

A plastic tab on the bottom of the windshield wiper fluid tank can chafe against a fuel line, potentially causing a hole that could lead to a fire. However, a company spokesman was quick to point out that there are no known incidents in which a fire has actually occurred.

Mail letters will be sent to car owners in January with specific instructions on how to fix the problem and avoid any potential fire.

Meanwhile, Chrysler is recalling more than 50,000 Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans built in 2008. A problem with the airbags may cause them to inflate accidentally.

In other news, Ford announced the expansion of an existing recall (August 2010) of 575,000 older-model Windstars over concerns that their rear axles can corrode and break. A total of 8,000 Canadian units are included in the expanded recall.
