In order to prepare its WRC return with the new Polo in 2012, Volkswagen Motorsport will run two Skoda Fabia S2000 in the remaining rounds of the 2011 season.
Local drivers Andreas Mikkelsen and Joonas Lindroos will both take part to Rally Finland, next round of the 2011 WRC championship. Mikkelsen is a regular IRC contender on a Fabia S2000, while Lindroos is clinched numerous victories in his home land.
Volkswagen Motorsport boss Kris Nissen explained to Autosport magazine that his team will evaluate several young talents in the second part of the 2011 season in order to run some of them on a Polo WRC next year.
Meanwhile, Autosport also revealed that Nasser Al-Attiyah, who has close links with the german manufacturer, and who was set to join the VW WRC team in 2012, will finally leave the team.
The main reason would be the decision VW has taken not to enter Touareg 4X4 in the next Dakar rally, in order to focus on its WRC program. Al-Attiyah, who won the 2010 Dakar, will probably take part to the event on a X-Raid’s Mini 4X4, and will take part to the 2012 WRC championship (except in Montecarlo in January) as a private entry, at the wheel of a Ford, or a Citroën.
