2020 will mark the 20th anniversary of the TT

The army of SUVs currently invading the market inevitable means certain other segments are having a tough go of it, at least in comparison with their prior salad days. A prime example is the category of luxury roadsters and coupes, like the TT from German automaker Audi.

And yet, next week at the 2019 New York Auto Show, the manufacturer will be presenting a revamped version of the TT RS.

The new edition gets a more-aggressive exterior design marked by a matte-black front grille flanked by the Quattro logo, now made of titanium. Additional radiators, placed behind that grille, will help with engine cooling. Other aerodynamic add-ons further serve to give the model a sportier demeanour. Notable elements include the rear spoiler and massive exhaust tubes that send a clear message as to the model’s primary vocation.

Standard features on the revised new TT RS include LED headlights and rear lights as well as five-branch 19-inch wheels from the Audi Sport division. Buyers can get optional 20-inch wheels when ordering the Dynamic package. In all, the car came be had in one of seven colour schemes, including new blue, red and green hues.

Inside, the changes are subtler. The model retains the manufacturer’s Virtual Cockpit, a wonderful bit of technology that replaces traditional dials. All models now welcome wireless smartphone charging, and phones can now be connected to the car’s antenna for an improved signal.

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration is included with Audi’s multimedia system.

As for what makes it go, the TT RS’ unique 2.5L 5-cylinder engine is back; it delivers 394 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. With this unit 0-60 mph acceleration takes all of 3.6 seconds, with the engine working in conjunction with a 7-speed dual-clutch S-tronic automatic transmission.

Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system is of course included as well, meaning this sporty coupe will be usable 12 months out of the year.
