The GV80 concept runs on fuel cells

Genesis unveiled its GV80 fuel cell concept on Wednesday at the 2017 New York International Auto Show. Hyundai’s luxury-car brand thus confirmed its intention to bring an SUV to market in the coming years.

Incarnating Genesis’ Athletic Elegance design philosophy, the innovative and technologically state-of-the-art concept SUV doesn’t make use of either a gasoline engine or a hybrid system, instead relying on a fuel cell-based powertrain, which, according to the automaker, offers genuinely refined performance.

The goal of the Genesis braintrust is to evaluate alternative propulsion systems and eco-friendly technologies for its future products and vehicles.

“The GV80 Concept is a SUV that alludes to the confidence and evolution of the Genesis brand – its design is timeless, with an understated yet dynamic overall surface complexity,” said Luc Donckerwolke, Head of Genesis Design. “These are all characteristics that embody Genesis products and delicately reflect distinctive elements, which you’ll continue to see in future models from our brand.”

In the case of the GV80, Athletic Elegance translates into muscular fenders harboring 23-inch alloy wheels, as well as minimalism-oriented details such as the electronic door handles placed beneath the car’s crease line to maximize aerodynamic flow and further simplify the vehicle’s lines.

The interior and exterior environments of the Genesis GV80 concept blend seamlessly thanks to side pillars made of structural beams visible from inside and outside of the vehicle.

The cabin welcomes passengers with an instrument panel that stretches from one door to the other. A large 22-inch curved OLED display integrated into the dashboard extends into the instrumentation available to the driver. Elsewhere leather, suede and wood elements combine to enhance the décor.
